For anyone wanting to know how to color case harden, or just wanting to read one man's path to learning how to do it well; here's a great thread:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Jim did a lot of testing, and trying various methods and mixtures, plus different water, and temp changes. He finally perfected the process just to do restorations on his personal rifles as a hobby. Then he retired, sold his business in Nebraska, and moved to his remote cabin near Cody, Wyoming and stopped doing it!
It's a very long read, but time better spent than watching TV, or napping.

Logan,
If you are going to have your parts CCH professionally, you should be able to rely on their advice.
If you are planning to do it yourself, it would be best to see if you could find a CCH course like those offered in the NRA summer gunsmithing programs.
If you have to rely on what you can find on the internet, I'd recommend that you start with test pieces. There many things that can go wrong in the CCH process and it would be a shame to ruin a gun or even worse to create an unsafe action, because of inexperience.

Otto,

I don’t have the time nor the space to experiment with CCH right now, even rust bluing is going to be new to me. Maybe once I get a house I’ll delve into it some more. For now, I’ll leave the things that may kill me to professionals. Most of them anyway..
