Anybody tried ozocerite and Vaseline lube? I found ozocerite at Etsy for $24/pound. Kind of expensive, so thought I'd ask you guys first.

I looked it up and got this:

"mineral wax composed principally of solid paraffinic hydrocarbons"

So, it will be similar to paraffin, making it much like Darr Lube, if mixed 50/50.

I used Darr lube for a long time, when I first started and it worked as good as anything, in those years and shot some near record scores with it. I gave it up for Smiley Lube in about '93. The reason was that it leaded my barrel, in weather over 80-85°. To combat that, I took my bullets to the range in a 6 pack type ice chest. I didn't have to worry about leading at any temp with the Smiley lube, that is now called Schuetzen lube.

There are a lot better chemicals available these days than the old-timers had access to.  Common fats and waxes “kinda work”, but there are lots of interesting compounds on the market.  Look into what I think of as “semi-polar” materials  such as glycerol.  Some of the fluoro-carbon greases such as the “Kel-F” compounds look quite promising.

No personal experience but here's some extra info on it from Naramore's handloading book.

Wasn't ozocerite one of the principal ingredients in old-time shoe polish?

Not sure if it was used in polish. Phil Sharp's handloading book said its primary use was in printing shops where it was used to make max molds electro-typing. So the local print shop was back then a cheap source from it.

Old Solider - what color is your ozokerite? Curious how refined it is and if that is driving the cost.

I don't have any ozocerite. I found it on line for sale, but it is not cheap, therefore wanted to see what you guys had to say about it.  Yes I believe it was used in shoe polish.
I also found steam engine cylinder oil for sale on line, not at a bad price. A lot of old recipes call for it. Just interesting.

When I read or hear of parafin or wax ralated to bullet lubes I think of bore leading.

Currently my lube is equal parts beeswax and lanolin. 1/2 quart steam cylinder oil and two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Viscosity is harder than axle grease. Looks like axle grease. Mostly I pan lube with it. The compounded steam cylinder oil and olive oil are the tackifiers. The lube is extra slippery but sticks to bullets.
