Note the screw slot positions on this action match the screw slot positions of one of the rifles in one of Grants.  It may be just the way the builder timed his screws or maybe the same action.

I am going to do another post with additional pictures as I don't know it there is picture quantity restriction in this soft ware.

I am not very knowledgeable on these guns, but the butt stock appears too a be replacement-should it not have a panel against the action?

Maybe the next time you pay the long dollar, you might get Jim Grant's books on single-shot rifles. There are five volumes, the first three being the best. They are out of print, but you might find them on the forum or on ABE books. You are into a rifle that has replacement sights (and if you can find a set, you will pay!), a replaced barrel, and to try to find an original, or to have a replacement made, will cost a lot. Then to find dies to make the original cartridges will be a challenge. I write books, and I think you need to buy some before you get too much far along. Tom Rowe

Amen to this.  Whoever JHD was, he turned a rifle that is difficult to supply with brass and one with considerable recoil into one that is usable, has easy-to-find brass, lots of cast bullet choices, and has lots of current loading info.  Back in 1947, he did you a huge favor.

Now we need to know who JHD was.

The shame is that he took a relatively rare rifle, with fewer than 200 probably made initially, in really nice condition, and turned it into a parts gun with limited value.
