Haenel Original Aydt Mfg Date

Print Post
I recently purchased a Haenel Original Aydt Rifle. 6771 is stamped under the forearm with proof marks and 172/28. I see no date anywhere on the rifle. I verified it is a 8.15X46R with a 308 bore and 316 groove, 1-14 twist. I have searched the internet but find no reference of serial no. to date of manufacture. Thinking the ser. no. is 6771, does anyone have an estimate when this one was built. Thank You for your help.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Back in March/April 2023 RIFLE magazine did an article on the Haenel Aydt Scheutzen rifles. You might want to contact them for a back copy? I've not read the article as I don't get this magazine, but usually their articles are well written.
I've never seen any history that would say when the Haenel Aydts were made. To make things tougher C.G. Haenel sold lots of rifle actions with their name on them to small makers who built them up.

There is a 4 digit number on the breech block that does not match the number stamped on the barrel. Is that possibly an indicator that the action was sold and barreled by one of the smaller makers? Rock Island Auction used the barrel stamp as the serial number.

Is the 172/28 a reference number and date related to when the barrel or barreled action was proofed?  Might the year be 1928?

As in entry 172 in the proof house's logbook for the year 1928?

The proof mark 172/28 found on some older European (often German) rifle barrels is a gauge marking that indicates specific bore dimensions.
These numbers are a traditional "gauge" measurement system (similar to shotgun gauges) that relates to the number of bore-sized round lead balls that would equal one pound.
The marking indicates:
172 is the main gauge number, suggesting a bore diameter near the 8mm range.
28 is an incremental part of that specific gauge system.
Specifically, the "172/28" mark corresponds to a nominal bore diameter of approximately 0.310 inches (or about 7.87 mm).
