I’m a little late to the party but The R.E. Davis Company, in Ohio, reproduces some butt plates. They’re brass flintlock plates but they’re 2” wide and look to have enough meat on them to fit to a curved profile.

Well, I can say I learned a lot with filing. Trying to file out the convex shape of the plate did not work great with the files I have, I need some that are more narrow I think. When i file one area, it digs in another. Polishing worked out great though.

I had written this off as a good first attempt that is more than usable,  but not perfect.  I was reading this morning on electroplating and stuff came up about nickel plating plastic using conductive paint. I think I'll try and fill the voids and low spots with epoxy and sand it smooth and even. Then I'll try the conductive paint and plate it.

Should be an interesting experiment!

Use a domed file/rasp instead of a flat one, and the rounded profile can easily be filed.  I showed how to do that in my post on detailed metal finishing, where I finished a similar buttplate.  Your file marks are also pretty much perpendicular to the plate, file at about a 30 degree angle, while simultaneously pushing the file sideways.  It will slide along the surface and not leave gouges that way.  Plus, it cuts faster, and doesn't clog the teeth as bad.

Thanks! I think I got over zealous cleaning up my bad weld. Another lesson learned,  I should have welded on a thin piece of metal onto the sides, rather than building up the sides with nothing other than a stick welder. I have learned quite a bit on this project,  and have more to go! If it ends up bad, I suppose I'm only out a $35 plate, so I'd say thats worth what I'm learning!

These are the marks giving me a hard time

Drum sanders in a 1/4 inch drill work excellent on butt plates.

I'd reweld the pits before I'd fill with epoxy and try electroforming over them to support plating.

The plating you'll have as a result won't be very durable, and I'd expect it will be peeling before long.  Silver solder in the pits would be a better alternative.

Do you have access to a torch so you can heat the buttplate up and let it cool gradually to anneal it? The stick welding rod might be harder than the buttplate and annealing will make it easier to shape and work.

Hmmm, i never thought of that. J don't have a torch, by my wife got me an outdoor broiler for my outdoor kitchen that goes to 1500 degrees.  That should do it!

Well, after quite a bit of work, got it all polished up! There are a few rough spots at the ends of the welds, but I'm worried now that taking more down will cause more issues to pop up, so I think I'll call it there.

I did have to use so.e epoxy as bedding material between the plate and stock. Since this is going on finished wood, I can't really work the wood, and I don't really have the know how or tools (maybe even the talant) to get the metal to fit the stock exactly.  I'll be using the conductive paint on the small exposed bits at the joint, so it shouldn't be subject to much wear. Next step is to try my hand at nickel plating!

A good polishing wheel and some compound will take a steel buttplate and make it look like it's plated. And once polished that well they retain the high shine forever. Jus wipe it off occasionally with any oiled cloth. I have a steel Farrow buttplate I polished up 30 years ago and still looks like new.

I taped a Swiss plate on my Hepburn for a match one time. Didn't stay on very long but duck tape is cheap and easy to use. Stayed on long enough for the match. I remember Chuck B had a Stevens rifle he took the butt plate off whenever he used it for BR.

I just built this single prong buttplate for my current Ballard project so I can use it offhand, or at the bench. It's a repro Farrow style buttplate that was too large for the donor stock, so I cut the top prong off and trimmed about 1/4" off the top to fit this stock. I'll just polish it up with various grit sandpaper until it's smoothed up. Still needs a slight bend to match the stock perfectly.

I debated cutting the top off, but figured I'd try it as is to start. Since this plate is cast, I was advised to not bend it, so I added some weld on the back side to get full contact.  It's close, but not perfect,  so thats why I used the bedding material.  The videos I've seen make nickel plating look very simple, I've actually done the opposite using electrolysis on old motorcycle parts. Just need salt, vinegar,  nickel strips, and a low voltage source.  I will definitely post it here. Another fun skill!

Jason, I bent that plate a lot to get the deep curve. It's also cast and I've beat on and bent a lot of cast plates with no heat applied. Brass, bronze, and 8620 steel bend without much effort and never cracked so far.

Good to know. This is likely going to be my first attempt with more to come. Since the welds turned out ok, I may end up getting or making a 1 prong from scratch. Before I started this project,  I figured the ones I found were too narrow. I may try one again,  weld some sheet metal on the side to widen, then go to work with grinders and files. The plating on this one is more of an experiment to see how it turns out
