Butt hook ideas

I currently have my rifle out on my kitchen counter doing some work on it and have been brainstorming ideas to make a butt hook.  The stock is about 1.7" wide, and I can't find any online that are more than 1.6", so I think I'm stuck with making one. I have a smaller garage with limited access to large tools, so most of what I do is limited to hand tools. My first thought was aluminum since I can easily work it by hand, but it's difficult to find a block big enough,  so I was debating trying sand casting?

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for someone that doesn't have access to a full shop?

Get yourself a piece of aluminum plate about 1/4" thick, or aluminum flat bar 1/4" thick and 2" wide. Then bend it to fit the contour of your stock at the buttplate. You can buy a piece of 1/4" steel rod and thread it for 1/4"-20 and then drill and tap a hole in your buttplate near the bottom. Bend the rod to the curve you want and thread it into the plate with a jam nut on the outside to keep it aligned.
I've seen a couple done this way, and have one that came with my Remington 37 target rifle that's done this way also. Not pretty, but they do work well.

If you're just hacking something together, cut one out of wood.

If you want to put a lot more effort into it than it's worth, make one out of styrofoam, and put together the stuff you need to sand cast it out of aluminum.

Or, make one out of wax, and have a brass foundry cast it for you.

Edit:  Re-read it, saw you need more width than you can find.  In that case, you're stuck either making one or modifying one.

If I was trying to work with oversize, I'd buy a steel one, and then weld it up to build it to the size/shape you want.  Then, anneal thoroughly to make it easier to grind and shape, and grind to shape.  If you don't have a welder, that's a skill that's pretty easy to buy from someone else.

Except for the satisfaction of doing it yourself, the best line of attack for most of these things is to just find the appropriate item and buy it.

What kind of rifle is that stock on?  Easiest line of action might be to switch out the stock for one set up for a schuetzen buttplate.

Here's the rifle. The stock is all set up, just missing the last piece

I might leave as it was if that's the rifle that you were running with, and bettering Jerry. H. at the last shoot offhand. Must be something right if you did that......

If it were me I would inlet a plate onto that stock then file the stock down to fit then refinish it.

You don't mention what tools you have.

Here's a plate I made from 1/2 inch plate back in the mid 80s. I did have tools. A torch, a buzzbox, a grinder, a vise and a welding hood.

Send the stock to CPA and have them install a butt hook on it for you.

Butt hook, sounds painful...  Embarrassed

Unfortunately no, that was with my new martini 22! It is set up right with the hook and palm rest. I normally can shoot in the high 170's, and even broke 200 with this one offhand a couple times, but I feel like I'm fighting the front end a bit. I was going to put the palm rest on my new rifle, but I think I'll leave it alone and use this til I get a new barrel.

Unfortunately I don't have a welder anymore after my move (bought my first house 2 years ago, and had to downsize my garage a lot). I'm pretty much stuck with hand tools, drill press, grinder and vice.

Speaking of butt hook sounding painful, in my research this morning,  the term "butt hook" led to a, um... different sort of website... yes, that is apparently a "toy" and they were on sale for black Friday! Just remember,  "the more you know!"

Having no tools, you gotta reach out for help. Nothing wrong with that. Send your butt stock to CPA. On second thought send all of it and have CPA set the barrel back too.

I made one out of delrin for a BSA INt. Buttplate was flat which helped. On my Uberti High wall, I bought a cast large Swiss buttplate and had a friend cut off and weld the prongs to the original Uberti buttplate. Lots of filing and polishing in both cases but all can be done with hand tools, although a grinder and scotchbright wheel helped a lot. All do-able with a welder and hand tools.

Good luck and have fun!

Well, I had bought a Zischang butt plate/hook a while ago that was too narrow. Found a guy up the road from me that will run a couple beads up the sides with his mig welder. That should make it wide enough,  then to work with the grinder!

Dixie Gun Works has two that might work. One is 7" long x 1 3/4" wide, the other is 7 1/4" long x 2 1/16" wide.
Both are as cast brass.
