highwall stock interfering with hammer fall

Hi,

I have an original DST highwall that functions perfectly without the buttstock attached.  I'm currently trying to get a second hand buttstock fit to it.

If I attach the buttstock and tighten the screws, when I pull the trigger the hammer falls to half cock.  If I take the screws out of the buttstock and try to pop a primer, I get a light strike, but the hammer does go all the way down.

Is it likely that the stock is making contact with the sear?  I can't see it affecting the fly.  I can't find any areas of contact, and I don't want to have the hammer fall onto the half cock notch too many times.

Any thoughts?

Chris.

I had a rifle that did something similar. It would slam fire with the stock on but worked fine without it. In my case the stock was pushing on the knockoff spring. Some judicious carving cured the issue.  Make up some inletting black (see recent thread) and coat the spring and possibly the sear as well.

Thanks Jack.  I hadn't looked at the knockoff spring.  Maybe I'll try to make some better inletting black.  I'll have a look at that thread now.  I've been using red lipstick.

Chris, What's probably happening is the long tailed sear is being bumprd by the stock.  The cut out for the sear clearance on the top tang of the stock where it butts up against the receiver needs to be deepened and made longer. The stock that you're trying to fit now has probably been shaped for the shorter sear needed for a single trigger. If you have another rifle fitted with with wide spaced triggers that you can remove from another rifle, you'll be able to see the difference in the two stocks. A closed coupled set trigger stock will also be the same as they both use the long tail sear.

The long-tailed sear is rarely seen in the wild unlike its cousin the standard sear.  The variation on the standard sear, the grooved sear, is more common than the elusive long-ailed sear and can be seen at gun shows and auctions.  Most of the long-tailed sears are leery of humans and you have to be patient to see one in its native environment.  There are attempts by MVA and C Sharps to breed the long-sear in captivity so the next generation will have the opportunity to experience the wonder of it for years to come.

Ha Ha!

Bob, actually I'm replacing a DST tang with another one.  The first one had been cut off and ground on a bit.  ( the top tang too unfortunately ).  The stock was inletted for these modified tangs.  The weird part is that they were cut off and put into a pistol grip stock.  The original tang was clearly a pistol grip tang!   I don't think I've seen another DST pistol grip "thick side" 1885.  I suppose I could find someone to repair the upper tang, but there are few gunsmiths up here in Canada that would be interested in that work.

I'm mostly doing this for woodwork practice as I might move the barrel and action internals to another action that hasn't been modified, then do a nice stock for it.

I'm going to mix up some better inletting compound rather than my red lipstick, and that might help me see some contact I'd been missing.  I'm sure ( or I hope Smiley ) it'll be obvious soon.

Chris,

Here is another thick side DST Pistol grip.  BUT it probably did not leave the factory that way as the lower tang and barrel seemed to be shipped uninstalled according to al available evidence.
