#2 Remington 38-55???

There is a Remington rolling block listed on Gun Broker as being a #1 action chambered in 38-55. Looking at the pics it appears to be a number 2 because of the radius at the butt stock/action interface. I'm confused. I know that the #2 was offered in 38-40 and in 38 rimfire, but surely not 38-55. I asked the seller for additional information and he replied that the barrel was marked "38" and that the bore at the muzzle measured a little over .361".
Here's the listing (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
He still calls it a #1, but I'm thinking it is a #2 rimfire 38.  What say ye?

Definitely a #2  and 38 RF is highly likely. Can't argue with some folks, just have to nod and smile

If you have never worked a gun show the "nod and smile" is used quite often. Every one is an expert...

It is a #2, and likely .38 Long RF or CF. But something is strange about the leading edge off the receiver! It appears to be different, or modified as it's certainly not like any #2's I own. That step in the front of the receiver isn't right.

Definitely a #2 but if you look close there is not a step ,
The receiver is actually beveled to meet the barrel.
So face of action is square. Factory work I don’t know.

Looks like I'll have to eat crow! I just got out my copy of John Gyde's Remington .22 rifle book, my go to for great info and pictures an anything Remington. On page 32 he shows a gorgeous original #2 that has the same step and no bevels to the frame corners! So appears for whatever reason that Remington did build some actions altered this way.

I think it look pretty good with the bevel. But it'd sure make a change to a fatter barrel a big problem.

Yes, but the example at GB, and the one in Gyde's book both have lighter barrels. So not sure why Remington did this and removed the nice looking treatment?
