Ballard accessories

Both Ballard Pacifics and Montanas rifle had wiping rods. Does anyone have an original, and if so, what was it's configuration? The replacement on my Pacific is set up like a muzzleloader with a brass end piece that is threaded for a jag, etc. Were the originals similar, or totally different? Thanks.

I have an original wiping rod, with extension I built for it. The wiping rod has bras ends on both ends. One end is a brass sleeve the wood shows flush at the end. The other end is another brass sleeve, but threaded to accept the extension or a jag, brush, etc.
I built my extension with a male threaded end and other end female threaded to fit. I used a .32 Long CF case to make the ends for my extension. threaded both to match the rod, then made a threaded brass rod for one end and Loctited it into the one end. I turned the rims off the cases, and faced off the headstamp also.

Val,
It would be wonderful addition to the site if you would make some dimensional drawings and pictures, source of rods and post it as a sticky

Not sure about drawings, but I can write up all the dimensions for the wiping rod, brass ends, thread sizes, and the extension for a 30" barreled Pacific. Only changes would be for rifles with longer or shorter barrels that would change the wiping rod lengths.
Then have to have a moderator make it a sticky in Gunsmithing section.

Thanks for the info. I too would appreciate the dimensions. One end of the rod that came with my Pacific has a brass sleeve with female threads, the other end is simply rounded off. I'm certainly interested in what type of extension you made. As for a source of rods, I bought a tube full of 3' long hickory rods from 5/16-1/2" in 2007 from an ad in Muzzleloader magazine. The return address says it was from Steve Bailey in Perryville, Missouri. No clue if he's still around or not. I can send the actual address in a PM if you like.

Thanks Val, that would be great.  I've never seen anything but a wood rod slid down the thimbles in place of the original rod,  but mostly, just nothing.

John's post is correct, except for the omission of the cleaning rod extension. I also never knew about the extension until I acquired an early advertisement for their Pacific Ballard that showed the whole gun in a drawing and short extension shown loose below the barrel in the ad. That finally cleared up my question of how the short wiping rod could ever completely wipe the barrel.
This is mine for my Pacific with the extension I made. And 2nd pic is a complete rod and extension I made up for a friend's Pacific.
I don't use the cross pin myself as I epoxy the brass ends to the hickory wooden rods. So not 100% accurate to the originals.
