Looking for shared secrets-stock finishing

The stocks on my original 1885 Winchester are now free of factory finish and I can see some real decent figure in there.  It's nothing fancy, but it is there and I want to enhance it to it's maximum potential.  The stocks will be finished with BLO, the old fashioned way.
The first couple of applications will be with a mix of 50/50 BLO and turpentine.  Is there something else I should add that will highlight the contrast of the grain~?

Yes indeedy. A healthy dollop of spar varnish. By doing so you're essentially creating what's known hereabouts as "TruOil". No need to enhance Birchwood-Casey's bottom line, their shareholders won't miss dinner on account of it.

I like to use Tung Oil for the first couple of coats and then use tru-oil. In the winter with the dew point low I can usually be able to do two coats a day. A coat is a couple of drops rubbed in with your fingertips. After a coat dries I take a white colored (green pad) and smooth out the finish such as dust  or unevenness. The more coats you put on the deeper the grain will be highlighted
A GREEN Pad is a nylon pad made by 3M and comes in different grits. The white colored pads are the finest.
Just my way of doing it.

Old Timer,

I shared this thread a while back:  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

The author, Jim, did really masterful work on metal and wood and the post is worth reading.

I use a 50/50 mixture of BLO & Spar varnish, applied warm.

It will not allow moisture to inter the wood.
