Gunsmith needed for barreling an original sharps

Print Post
I have an original 1874 sharps rifle that was once before re-barreled back in the 1800's. It was re-barreled from 45 to 40 cal. That barrel is toast. I have had Shiloh do a re-barrel job on a similar original Sharps rifle and the final product was awesome. The problem is that it took way more than a year to be completed. I was hoping that someone could recommend a gunsmith for such a job? I live in NM and don't mind shipping the rifle but would prefer someone in the West. Thanks for your help.

I talked to John a while back and he said he is now retired. He was my first choice since I have one of his rifles and it is a work of art!

Sorry to hear John is retired. He did fantastic work. He cut square threads in a Sharps kit receiver for me several years ago when no one else could.

Another vote for C. Sharps. I have had them build two rolling blocks and rechamber and modify the stock on a modern highwall. The work on all three was done on-time, on-budget, and the quality was excellent.

I appreciate the suggestions already offered. Please suggest a gunsmith that can re-bore the barrel to a larger caliber. The existing barrel is 40 cal. I thinking that it could be rebored to 44-77 sharps. I'm not excited about having a liner installed,
Thanks for your help!

Try JES reboring.

Jes rebored and rifled a 94 Winchester for me a few years ago and the work was very good and price was very reasonable.

C Sharps has stopped doing any work beyond production work for now. They said they're too busy keeping up with current work loads.

A few years ago I had C. Sharps rebarrel an original Remington #1 sporting rifle with a new green mountain .44-77 barrel. They even added the E. Remington & Sons barrel markings in a style very similar to the original. But different enough to tell it is not original. Their turnaround time was about 2 months.

Thanks for the suggestion, I already have several Sharps in 45-70. I also have plenty of 44-77 brass(some from SSDave) and dies. I have 3 original rolling blocks in 44-77 but I can't seem to shake the urge for a Sharps in 44-77 or 50-70.

I've had numerous barrels fitted by C Sharps in the past, and always good work in fairly quick time frames. But late last year they said they wont do outside barrel work until they get caught up, so turned down my project.
They still do it for some gunsmiths they've worked with for years, so I sent it to one I've known for many years and he took it to C Sharps and had it done for me.

I'd still give him a call and see, he was getting better and was still taking work last time I stopped by there, but that was awhile back so not sure myself, but I'd call to confirm.
