SCG Marking on .30 Schwartz Barrel
Oct 12th, 2025 at 11:21am
Print Post
I recently acquired a Schuetzen style Ruger #1 chambered in .30 Schwartz. The top of the barrel is mark with the following “SCG” marking.  I was wondering if it’s the gunsmith’s marking that built the gun but haven’t been able to find anything. Does anyone know what this marking is?

I believe that would be CGS, but no idea who it might be.

Thanks Willis, maybe the CGS will help with internet searches.

I would have bet money that someone here would have known right away. I'd be interested as well if someone can ID the mark.

Brands are read outside to inside, top to bottom, left to right. So likely SCG.

Good chance this is your guy, Stern Custom Gunsmith.

I knew Wayne Schwartz, not really well, however he made up a switch barrel rifle for a friend, and so I know that Wayne did barrel-up rifles. As I recall, it was on a Hall action, one barrel was 22 Long Rifle, and the other barrel was a 30 Schwartz.

Wayne liked Ruger single shots, and didn't his son do some gunsmithing also? I don't know what his son's name is to see if the initials match.

I met Wayne in 1980 when he and I manned the target shack at the CBA National Matches at Wapwallopen, PA. Spent all weekend scoring targets and talking guns with him. By the time it was over he we agreed for him to re-barrel a Martini Cadet for me. We both thought the .28 Schwartz would be the cat's pajamas in the rifle but he ended up doing it in .30 Schwartz instead because of the plethora of .30 molds out there versus the scarcity of good .28 molds. It shot well but a few years later I fell prey to a swap with a shooting buddy so the gun went to Ohio. I figured I could always get Wayne to build me another rifle but put it off until it was too late.
