Bullet lube

An old subject I’m sure and I did not do a search.

I just finished my first match season of shooting using my new CPA chambered in .38-55. The barrel is 1:12 twist, bullets weigh
345-grains, powder is either IMR 4227 or SR4759, and I breach seat.

The only lube I’ve used so far is SPG. However, in reading old books about the Scheutzen era, there is a lot of data on different lubes, most being homemade.

I’m not a scientist, so mixing and melting various ingredients is something not in the mix (pardon the pun).

My question….is there a commercial lube that I should look at besides SPG.

Thanks!

Tom

I know a lot of friends who have used SPG for many years and still do. They tell me it works great. I mix up my own formula that has alox as part of my blend.

Javelina Schuetzen Lube is the one to use.

Temps here can run from a little below freezing to over 100 degrees. No leading, easy clean-up, and superior accuracy are what you get when using JSL.

For me SPG works great with black powder, but not smokeless.

I've been using Javelina for a couple years now. Works good. Smells bad. My supply is low so switched to one of my own lubes which I like better.

I have been using SPG for many years both black and smokeless. If you keep velocities in check I have never had any leading. For smokeless if you are going to hot rod it one of the smokeless lubes is best.

Many lubes work okay, but it all depends on what you want to accomplish.

If you're looking for bench rest competitive accuracy they're not all up to the task.

JSL is, without a doubt.

SPG, AKA Spudge smells the best.

I don't know about that Joe.

For me l'odeur de JSL is an intoxicating smell. Much sexier than SPG.
