Barrel matting

I recently posted a question about barrel matting about how it is done. Got a good response with several posting. I am working on a 22LR barrel for my Ballard kit. After cutting the octagon section I left about .010 excess on the top flat. It measured about .520 across so I had a 5/8 end mill I ground three of the flutes away on the end leaving just the one. I indicated the barrel flat in and touched off and cut a .005 deep pass. It made a perfect "swirlie" pattern. While most matting is straight or wavy lines I couldn't duplicate that so I used what I had. It certainly looks unique and if I change my mind I will just "erase"it with a pass from my end mill. Anyone else tried different methods of matting?

JMH,
Here's one I did a few years ago.  I don't recall the diameter of the endmill, it was the largest I could fit between the barrels without touching them, 3/4" I think.  Anyway, a two flute, relieved the center, ground what looked like a threading point on the face of each flute and allowed .015"? depth of cut.  I fit, regulated and then milled the rib flat, sweat blood matting the rib and it turned out fair.

I have used a roll die many times but on thin barrels it can cause the barrel to warp.

Interesting thread!
I’ve been asked several time over the last few months if I could matt a rib.  You guys have me thinking more seriously about it now.

Ithaca used the same technique (and got the same results!) on some of their early SxS models top ribs. IIRC up to and including the Flues model.
Makes a very nice matting pattern.

I started top rib matting using a single point cutter to create different patterns using different speeds and feeds.
The best patterns were those using the preceding system but with different starting points to create a pattern with the circular pattern on either side of a center line.
This system required only a mill bed long enough to mill the top rib in one pass and a power feed table.

The second matting attempt used a metal checkering file with and without a clamp on guide but was unsuccessful at least in my hands.

My current method uses an engraving cutter to engrave lines across the rib and I've settled on 30 lines per inch.
