Sharps Bordshadt 1878 MILITARY model

I own the military model and could never seem to find any more information past the same cliche talking points. I'm really hoping there's more to the 8-9 thousand rifles they made past a few militia sales, unsatisfied wholesalers and some custon hunting rifles. I could also only assume the proper loading in 45-70 for the rifle was the 405g bullet vs the later 500g bullet since it predates it's adoption by a few years.

Is there a larger information base about these rifles short history?

You might try to find a copy of Sharps Firearms by Frank Sellers.

I found a used one on eBay for a reasonable price.

He has a chapter dedicated to the 1878 Model.

Mike.

This is the latest book on 78’s.  Sorry for the poor picture!

I think the original loading for the 45/70 rifle was the 500 gr load. I believe the 405 load was originated for the carbine, to reduce recoil, in the carbine.

I thought the bullet weight was increased to 500 for better accuracy at distance and the carbine load just reduced the powder to 55 grains from 70?

Yes the 405g hollow base came first for the rifle and had a reduced load for the carbine. Somewhere between 1881 and 84 the 500gn bullet was used
