I don't Get It

I am stuck.  I have never been a big conventional scope guy, and this one came on a high wall I got today.  I removed the rear ring which was held by side screws and the two screws indicated by the lack lines.  There is another screw that goes into the barrel (white arrow) but is under the front scope ring.  What I can't figure out is how to remove that from ring bottom piece.  The portion directly under the ring is not touching the long part of the base so the front portion (fat white arrow) is holding it on.  I have tried some gentle tapping but nothing.  Any ideas?

It twists out after a 90 degree turn. Put a padddd crescent wrench tomit and turn it counter clockwise a quarter turn and it will pull straigh out.

Easiest way, a short piece of 1" round bar, clamp in like the scope and turn.

Thanks.  I looked at some photos and figured that out too.  Interesting system I guess.  I will probably leave it on and just use conventional scopes instead of D&Ting for Unertl style mounts.  Too bad they drilled a hole in the top of the receiver.

Ain't this forum great!

Thanks guys.

That hole can be filled if you so desire. I once had a small Martini someone mounted a receiver sight on that a guy fixed for me. He used a piece of flat brass material as a backer and TIG welded them using coat hanger as a filler. When refinished you couldn't tell.

That front scope ring is a Extension type, meant to move the ring portion offset, in this case for better/proper eye relief.

In this case due to the two parts silver soldered together, a close fitting wrench on the front flats work the best in removing the front ring section from the base

I put my share of them on years ago on certain long action bolt rifles.

I have a pair of pliers with what looks like Delrin jaws that worked fine to rotate the front ring.  The downside of this mount is the scope will need to be ‘permanently’ installed unlike my Lyman and Unertl ones.  Time will tell if I keep it this way or install traditional scope blocks.

I had one here a couple of days ago. Not sure where it went.  If you see it let me know Smiley. It had a good home now.

Jack that style mount allows you to adjust windage Incase the screw holes were not drilled correctly.

I did read about that feature.  I like the strength of the mount. My only issue is it will take up more room in one of my smallish safes.  I might just keep it in my sons’s stack-on safe.
Time to figure out a load and dig out the dies and brass. I do have some 50 year old factory ammo that was for my Win 94. I should shoot some of that.

What caliber is that shooting iron?  I have used 3x power scopes on some of my rifles so that I can mount them as far to the rear as possible for better eye relief.  Tom

It is a 30-30 high wall. The scope is a cheaper one built by Weaver in 4x. I found one that sold for $32 recently. The mount does allow for good eye relief.  I do have some better scopes including a 10x Lyman All American and a fair quality 20x Japanese Tasco
