Been looking for an adult sized 22 SS.  Was scrolling for 1915s and found this.  Opinions and info welcomed.  Feel free to tell me how bad I did  Smiley

Nice rifle, good price.  Even if you have to put a liner in it or a new barrel, you'll be pretty good money wise.

This model 44 appears to have a much heavier barrel than the standard #2 weight. It also wasn't dovetailed for a rear sight. Hopefully the barrel serial number matches the frame. Nice buy. Odd it was mis-identified as a 414.

Both the barrel weight and lack of dovetail jumped out at me.  Perhaps a special order or factory rebarrel?  hoping for a nice tight chamber.

Possibly set back and re chambered, it’s an odd length barrel. I have 44 1/2 that the same thing was done, it’s a great shooter. Hope it works out well

The shiny breach face could indicate that.  Or the seller measured from the wrong place.  Looking forward to finding out. Smiley

With the action open, it looks like there is possibly a liner in it. It's hard to tell from the picture. My gut says that the barrel wasn't set back, unless it was a quarter of an inch. Please let us know what you have when you have the rifle in hand.

Hmmm, you could be right.  Would not bother me at all.  Too bad no muzzle shot.  Be sure to follow up when in hand.

If the barrel serial number matches I'd say you got a good deal on a special order model 44 as the standard barrel was 26 inches with longer barrel lengths available for an additional cost.

Nice deal. Keep us updated. I wonder what's stamped on the action face.      BUY THE 1st CENTER FIRE BLOCK THAT YOU SEE.

A 25-20 barrel would be cool.

In hand:
-It does have a liner.  Pristine condition once the closet fuzz was cleaned out.  Seating a standard LR engraves the nose of the bullet.
-The muzzle has been cut.  Well done, but that explains the  length.  Probably lost 3/4".
-Face of the reciever shows a 44. Action is tight, trigger is light and clean.  Lever snaps in the last .5".  Good case coloring on the block and hammer still.
-It is a Stevens barrel. But I would say is not original to the action.  Photo of underside of the barrel below.  25, 20, and a 1.

To the range tomorrow.  I could see sending the stripped reciever to CPA in a year or two for polish and case hardening.  Well pleased with it so far.

That's an early barrel, likely pre model 44, a model 107 to 110 possibly. It would have had a 7 o'clock extractor, so it likely was shortened on the breech end with a new extractor cut. How long is the octagon portion of the barrel?

The octagon from the face of the receiver to the transition is 8".

My 44 model 45 in 25-20 has the standard for model 45s 28 inch barrel and small Swiss buttplate but the barrel is not that heavy. I like Sure Shot's idea that the barrel was shortened just enough for a new extractor placement.
