If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

Nice rifle. The caliber, not so nice. I had a Pendersoli Sharps Infantry rifle the was rechambered to 45-120. It was murderous with BP and 500 gr bullet loads and inaccurate when using standard 45-70.

I had an 18 pound Shiloh Sharps in 45-120.  Even with that weight it was no fun to shoot.  And, one year at the Virginia City Buffalo Runners shoot the fellow next to me was shooting a Ballard in 50-140.   Got a bloody nose every time he toutched one off.

Neat old Ballard hunting rifle. There must be someone over there who can figure out a reduced load. Maybe not. Easy recoil with reduced loads. With reduced loads in my 45-90s I can shoot without any extra padding.

I bought another Ballard found at the Raton ISSA matches. A barreled action. RKS barrel. Plan is to make a # 6 with it. Engraved action, geez it's nice. Perty sure it was a # 6 when new. Chambered in 32-40 which is perfect. Have all the parts minus a forestock and a palm rest.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

At the price he's asking, and the fact it's not original there's no surprise it hasn't sold. They of course have the model wrong as it's a 1 1/2, not a 1/2. Marlin never made a Model 1/2 and the 1 1/2 was never offered in .45-120, so that hurts the value too. The largest cartridge for a 1 1/2 I've ever seen was .45-70, and there's lots of them in that cartridge.
Better find a better reason to denigrate those beautiful Ballards, or educate yourself on them before doing so.

Perfectly salable if it's brought to the US, and priced at $1000 or less.  Nothing wrong with the cartridge, just load it appropriately and shoot it.

Only undesirable because of price and location.

Come on guys, 540 grains of lead at 1300 fps is a light load in a 12 gauge 3 inch magnum and the shotguns weigh less than our target rifles and no shotgunner worries about their shoulder.

Reminded myself of that last week, took out my 300 win mag and shot a few rounds with 220 grain bullet at 2750 fps.  Makes my 45-90 with 540 grain at 1300 fps seem like a light recoiler.

What’s the story of the 45-120? Wasn’t it a Winchester express cartridge for the Highwall? Was it ever factory chambered in any of the buffalo rifles?
I had one once in a highwall that was re chambered from 45-70. It was a fierce kicker not so much because of the cartridge but because of the #3 barrel and crescent butt plate. I sold it and a box of shells to my brother in law who was impressed the huge case. When he passed away I got it back from my nephew with 18 loaded rounds. I had it reclined to 38-55. It behaves nicely now!

Big difference between shooting offhand standing or bench, steel butt plate or rubber, load data, and the list goes on.

My first serious single shot was a 45-70 Shiloh Business rifle. Short barrel, crescent butt and a LONG throat. It was deadly accurate with the NEI 349C bullet barely seated into a case. It held more powder than my standard chamber 45-90.  It was OK shooting sitting off X-stix but off the bench, it felt like someone was punching me in the cheek.  In its prime it would shoot 1-1/2” 200 yd groups on a regular basis

Not sure about the Winchester version, but the one I know of it the .45-120 Sharps and it came out during the buffalo hunt days, but before many were sold Sharps folded. Other makers chambered this same cartridge, but I haven't got details on them.

The 45-2.8" was the sharps chambering, occasionally loaded with 120 grains powder.  The cartridge discussed here is the 45-3.25" case, created by Winchester as an express cartridge for the 1885.  Half a decade after Sharps closed its doors.

The two are often confused in modern times.  Nobody even back the 1880s much cared for the longer case, modern desires for the biggest, bestest, baddests "Buffler gun" created beasts like this.

Along with the 50-3.25" it's best use is as a good way to get a decent rifle cheap for the rebarrel of your choice.
