1885 listed in the Win. 2016 catalog.

Although it's not called an 1885, but Winchester Single Shot Rifle, following is all the info on the rifle in the 1916 Catalog.  I read one report that the highest serial number rifle was mfg. 1913 which obviously is in error unless Win. had a bunch of inventory to get of. Note the Win. Supplemental Chamber in the last photo.

I used to have a bunch of those supplemental chamber adapters for a bunch of different cartridges. Some Winchester, Some Ideal, and some Savage marked. Got most of them in one box I saw on a guy's table at a local gun show way too cheap. Then that got me looking for them and buying more. Some were sort of worthless like .32 S&W Long for a .32-40 that were pitifully inaccurate.
I was looking at some one day at a gun show with crazy prices, and told the guy I should be selling if they're that expensive. We ended up getting together the next week and he paid me over 15x what I paid and was excited. I was excited too!

I have to agree on the .32 S&W Long for a .32-40 adapter. It makes a good cleaning rod guide though.

I know that Winchester made-up 3rd Model Winder Muskets for military and civilian rifle training into the 1920's, and I've heard that Winchester supplied parts for 1885's long after that.

It's interesting that, which the exception of the Winchester Single Shot Rifle, every firearm in the 2016 catalog is listed by a year model number, e.g., Model 1895, Model 1905, Model 1897, etc.  When, if ever, was the Single Shot Rifle called the Model 1885 by Winchester prior to the end of production in 1920?  Or was Model 1885 first used by firearm writers & historians due to the 1st year of production?

This article mentions the rifle as Model 1885, but the table of contents from the 1885 Winchester November sales catalog was the first to list the rifle according to the Cornell publications listing.  It does not refer to it as a model 1885

And the winner is......... The Winchester Single Shot rifle.  I bought the PDF version of the November 1885 catalog and "1885" is not even in it except for the title.

Browsing the table of contents of Winchester yearly catalogs as listed on the Cornell publicatios site, th elast reference in the table is in 1916.  But it is listed as shown below.  Not sureeif that is a Cornell typo of if it in in the actual catalog. I will be able to tell when I get the hardbound reproduction from texasmac.

TexasMax,

Your first picture has  caliber list.  There are reference numbers after some of those cartridges in that list.  Can you post the page that defines those reference number, if there is one, please.

Just curious what those number mean.

DD,

I see the numbers & have no idea what they refer to, but in any case I no longer have the book.  It's on it's way to the buyer (bpjack).  Possibly he can answer when he receives it.  Sorry.

Since the book coming is destined for the bookshelf, I decided to spend $11 and buy a downloadable copy from Cornell publishing. I see those reference numbers but to can’t find any other sign of how they are tied to the ctg.

I figured it out!  Based on this sentence just below the caliber list, the same numbers indicate barrels that cam be interchanged with the takedown model of the Winchester Single Shot.  Looks to be based on extractor size.
