A fire of this type and contents the firefighters just establish a safe perimeter and let it go. No hoses, water or big equipment. Read a piece years ago about a powder depot in the Philippines during WW II that lit off and threw a couple of jeeps through the air into some barracks killing dozens of locals.

There is a lengthy history of black powder makers and warehouses here in the states that leveled everything nearby. Biggest of this type destroyed the entire city of Halifax, Nova Scotia when an ammo ship in the outer harbor blew up. It will be years before Powder Valley gets back on their feet. A real shame considering our limited powder market.

Firefighters actually let company people remove all their computer equipment from the offices to save it, but I heard the warehouse got hit hard. PV says they're rebuilding and making it even better.

I'm glad everyone is OK but I'm surprised that the large quantities of powder that they must have had (especially black) weren't required to be stored in bunkers.

You may be right with some small town fire dept's. But gun powder ( smokeless ) is normally classified as a Class B based on the deflagration or rate of burn. While  Black Powder is rated as an explosive due to its ' Brisance ' or its force wave.

All insurance companies and OSHA require large quantities of BP must be housed in bunkers. Anyway big city FD's would doubtfully allow anybody into the structure burning Class B.

I don't know exact details, and it's possible the office is separated, but close enough they thought it might also be damaged, so were allowed to remove their computers. And as you said, it's a small town of less than 11,000 people SE of Whichita, Ks. so likely even a volunteer fire dept.

Quote:
COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) - A rural warehouse was heavily damaged in an early morning fire Sunday.

Around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to reports of a fire at Powder Valley Outdoor Sports on 151st Road, just a few miles east of Winfield. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a heavy fire throughout the warehouse and processing side of the building.

Crews initiated a defensive fire attack, with more units soon arriving to prevent further spread. As firefighters worked to contain the fire, computer servers were securely removed from the building.

Firefighters from Arkansas City, Atlanta, Burden, Dexter, Oxford and Udall assisted in the fire.

There are some photos of the results on their Instagram account. You don't need an account to see them.

Powder Valley is out of town from Winfield several miles. Probably 10 miles from town. The office building is separate from the warehouse. I live about 60 miles away so I go there in person to pick up my stuff.

PV still has lots of items for sale, but not ammo components.  I ordered some stuff from them today.
