JHM,

When you say  all you “ could get was around a two inch group with several flyers’”, does that mean that the flyers opened the groups to 2 inches, or that the flyers made the actual groups even larger?   Diagnosing the problem might require more information.  Are most of the rounds falling into a decent group with flyers opening it up?  Are shots strung horizontal or vertical?  Is it printing two “groups” in a series of shots?  That sort of information will help, and pics would be even better.

After a few mods and probably a scope I plan to return to the range and will give a full account. May take a few days as I am looking for more ammo to try but I will be back. To answer your question my basic group was about two inches. The flyers opened it up to three to four at worst. Scattered everywhere.

Once you have a baseline from firing it again, remove the forend and see if that changes the grouping.  If it does, relieve the end that touches the receiver so that there's a .010" gap, and bed the forend a couple inches in front of and behind the attachment screw with a small dab (nickel size, once spread out) of silicone sealer.

Another thing with a .22, try resting the rifle on the barrel, about 2 or 3 inches from the muzzle, instead of the forend if that's what you're doing.  That can make an incredible difference.

Whenever I fit a forend on one of my builds I always leave a tiny gap for the  reason you stated. I was resting it on the forward end of the forend. Never thought about trying it resting on the barrel. If the naked barrel makes a difference I will do as you suggested. It is supposed to be in the mid eighties here next week so I hope to go back to the range. Thanks everyone...

To find the precise area to rest on the barrel end, hold the rifle in the air, hanging straight down, held by pinching between your thumb and finger on each side of the barrel, a bit behind the muzzle.  Tap the barrel near the receiver with a plastic, wood, or rawhide mallet.  Feel the vibrations, as you do that where you're holding it.  Move the pinch point a bit at a time, and rest it where you feel the least vibration.  Most of my rifles like 2 or so inches from the muzzle best.
