Ballard links

I have a Marlin Ballard forged action.  It has been gunsmithed before I got it.
The firing pin strikes the primer about .032 high at 12 oclock.  Do I need to lengthen the distance between the holes in the link or make them closer and any idea by how much.  I would like to center it up and also what material to make a new one I am thinking 4140 and quench in oil to make it tough not brittle.  All help appreciated.  Charlie

More than likely the rifle didn’t lock up properly.  Someone changed the screws but that didn’t fix it so they installed a new longer link.  This link fixed the lockup but raised the breech block and the firing pin strike.

If it were mine, does not misfire and locks up properly, I’d leave it alone.

But, if you are going to attempt correcting it, the holes need to be closer together in-order to lower the firing pin strike.

Another but, if you do this, more than likely you will open a can of worms.  There’s a good chance it will not lockup.  Then you have a much more complicated fix.

There’s lots more to a Ballard operation than most understand.  It’s not as simple as many of the other falling block rifles.

The good thing is, if you make a link and have issues, you can just reinstall the original.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

As Bob mentioned, changing the link will center the strike, but then it will create headspace issues. If it fires I'd leave it alone. If you do change it to make it strike center, then you'll need to build up the back of the breech block halves and stone them down until it locks up properly.
