Here is an old detaied thread discussinh lugged hammers.

So, to educate this Stevens 44 owner with a non-lugged hammer, what is the purpose or benefits of a lugged hammer?

In simplest words it adds another pin the share the load of firing pressure. 
The block is supported by the lug, so the hammer pin also takes the hit along with the lever pin.

Thanks.  That makes sense.  So I assume lugged hammers are only found on 44&1/2 receivers since the 44 is not designed for higher pressure loads.  And fitting is critical.  I.e, the top of the hardened lug should be in contact with the block when fired.

Wayne, the 44 1/2 is a different animal altogether and requires no lug. The 44s that had the lug were only on ones chambered in 32-40 and 38-55 I believe. Nowadays the 44 would not be considered suitable for those calibers though some on the list have and shoot them but with careful loads.
