38-55 Powder Charge

I'm looking for some ideas on powder charges for a 38-55 using breech seated 255, 280, and 320 grain bullets.

Powders will be 300MP or H108. Various primers available if you wish to share your match loads.

I'm not a complete idiot, some of my parts are missing.

Jerry,

It's early in my "research". I have a new CPA in .38-55 and will be breach seating @ our matches. My mold is by Accurate, weighing about 345-grains and the barrel twist is 1;12.

Last year I was shooting fixed ammo in a Rem Rolling Block. That has a Green Mountain 1:12 twist barrel. The mold was a NOE 330-garin. I tried 300MP and 4198 but settled on IMR 4227.

So my limited research has me using IMR 4227 with the 345-grain Accurate bullet. I started at 16.0-grains, then tried 17.0-grains, then 18.0-grains. Next up is 18.5-grains of the 4227. That might be the max. charge that I mess with.

Right now I'm focused on finding a Weber type breach seating tool.

Tom

Don't know about 38-55 but the data sheet that Hodgdon used to supply with H108 listed 2 loads for breech seated 202 and 204 grain bullets in 32-40. These were 12.6 and 12.5 grains respectively. These yielded 1368 and 1353 fps at 19,500 CUP. If you have a strong rifle and a chrono you might just try to get in the traditional 1400-1440 fps range.

Thanks. I should have mentioned that this is a Winchester HW, so it's plenty strong.
