Low Wall .22 "Safari Rifle" project help

I have an idea of building a low wall .22lr into something like a traditional English stalking rifle.  My idea would be a slim octagon barrel, express sights, ebony forearm tip, red pad or steel butt plate, etc...  Think 'squirrel safari'.

Could a pistol grip sporting stock from CPA or Treebone be shaped enough to give the appropriate appearance?

I ask because RJ Renner does something similar where he takes a Ruger No1 and turns it into a classic looking English stalking rifle. I was wondering if mild(ish) changes to a standard low wall stock could result in a similar transformation.

Well, if you really want traditional english, you'll need a round barrel, not an octagon  Wink

Americanized English  Smiley.

I'm worried the geometry of the action and stock are wrong and no amount of shaping will get me there.

no reason I can think of. get a pistol grip trigger housing from Mva or C Sharps or DZ arms and the stock you mentioned and away ya go.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I'd call George at Treebone and talk to him about your idea and see if he has a pattern that will be close to what you're wanting. Whatever he has will be extremely close and not result in days of whittling down to get to what you need, unlike other semi inletted stock offerings are.
I'd skip the recoil pad for a .22 stalking rifle. A nice steel plate would look much better.

Looking at Mr Renner's work, I don't see that he's changed the pistol grip much at all. He's reduced it thickness of the stock from heal to toe but most of his English look comes from the reduction of the forearm. If you think you may need more wood in that area, any stock maker should be able to leave extra wood in the area and then you can work it down to your liking. I wonder how a low wall with a Prince of Wales pistol grip would look?

I have seen numerous English rook rifles with octagon barrels.
If you want to be really cool, an ovate one is extra nice.

As for the stock, iron tips (heel and toe plates) are quite handsome.

This is probably the closest of the ones I've seen, except for the scope.

I could simplify things and make it cheaper if I just went with a straight grip.

If I remember correctly Ballard Rifle Michigan made a few English style 1885 for Safari Club in large English calibers and Prince Of Wales pistol grips and Safari parade sights shortly before they closed their doors. Might look for some examples for ideas? They looked sweet but we're way out of my price range at the time.   My $0.02

Chawk, if you want to stick with a LW .22 LR in a traditional British style for field use, here's a variation that I regularly see here in Oz that was quite popular. All came from Britain in the early 1900's and have British proof marks, a straight grip shotgun butt, flat steel checkered plate and a 24" round barrel. The sling eyes add a nice touch. The middle one had express style sights which I removed in favor of the Lyman 103 tang sight. They make great rabbit rifles.
