222 Rem magnum

Anyone have experience with this round? Have a friend who wants me to rechamber his 222 to 222 magnum. The magnum round is .100 longer than the standard round with a little difference in the neck area. As best as I can tell the chamber should clean up. Any thoughts ideas or advise? I have found the reamer with head space gages available for rent.

A waste of time and the devaluation of a good rifle.
It will probably not be as accurate as the original 222, and it would be better to just rechamber to 223 Rem, if it really needs to be done.

Some forty  years ago I had acquired an older benchrest rifle that was in .222 Rem- retired due to changing trends and a bit of worn throat. I had the idea to redo it to the .222 mag, but a friendly gunsmith said the same thing- skip it and just go for the .223. Even in those days the .222 brass was semi scarce, but could be made (to no advantage) from the GI round as well as the commercial fixings. The thing became a pretty good varmint gun and is probably still doing well, wherever it may now be.

Friend says his reason is he has a boat load of the 222 mag ammo and nothing to shoot it in. If he insists will the 222 chamber clean up to the mag dims?

Sell/trade the mag ammo for std. Leave the rifle alone.

According to the SAAMI chamber drawings, the chamber will clean up, when cut to 222 Mag. The throat is the same as the 222 Rem.

I don't understand the aversion to the 222 Mag. If it's limited brass, the 17 Remington is almost the same length as a trimmed 222 Mag. I don't think the rifle would know.

If he has the brass and the curiosity, why not?  The chamber should clean up since the only difference is length.

The .222 Magnum was George Leonard Herter's preferred cartridge in a rifle of that type, and he tolerated nothing but the absolute best of everything, made from the finest materials by the most skilled craftsmen and sold at the fairest prices.

As far as I can see from what I've read, the only reason for the demise of the .222 Magnum and the eclipse of the .222 Remington was the fact that you can fill a bucket with reloadable .223 Remington empties in five minutes at any rifle range for free, and the ballistics of loads made from such are indistinguishable from those of the other cases.

I have a .22 varmint rifle that somebody rechambered for an "improved" case halfway between a .219 Donaldson and a .219 Zipper Improved.  The internal capacity is just about that of a .222 Magnum and it shoots very well.
