I picked up a nice old 10ga double gun today so now I need some shells. Anyone making them anymore?

Duck and goose hunters use lots of 10 ga shells.  Get some of their empties and cut them down to the right length, which I think is 2 7/8.  Antique roll crimpers are out there, see if you can find one.   I got to where I use BP in all my shotguns -- it’s thermodynamically the best propellant for shotguns anyhow -- same velocity and half the pressure of smokeless.  PM for more discussion.

Try Ballistic Products, they carry everything you will need. Also reasonably priced…

2nd Chris’s advice. I’ve loaded well over a thousand short 10’s for 3 side by sides. Vintage events always have a 10G class. And they are very effective crow hunting. 10 lb 32 inch 10 SXS 1 1/4 oz shot 1150 fps light recoil is a pleasure to shoot.

Parker club perhaps the best source for loading information. Members have had several popular loads pressure tested. Basically 12 gage target load, powder and shot, 10 G plastic wad with a cut fiber cushion wad filling space. Most black powder loads are built with fiber and card wads stacked to fill space. Best go to Chris for BP specifics. I can give you my smokeless loads.

Chris’s advice on hulls spot on. I bought a big bag once fired on line and cut down to 2 7/8 on a band saw 4 shells at a time in a simple clamshell jig.

Looks like RST has them in stock.  They make shell that are low pressure for vintage guns.  If you want to just shoot it, this is the way to go, but not cheap.  I have a 10 gage Remington Lifter and 1882 SXS’s and shoot them in both.  I have a dozen or so other vintage SXS’s in various  gages and use them in all the guns.

If you want to load, I think I have some empties I could send you.

RST a very good option when available, last few years they have been scarce. I used to buy loaded RST 16s then reload the hulls.

Trouble with brass cases it’s very expensive to obtain the volume you need for competition. SXS tournaments other than 12G are mostly 50 shot events. Add a warm up round and some extras for broken birds etc. most carry at least 150 loaded shells. Crow hunting I always had 50 minimum.

Note only difference in my crow and target loads, 7 1/2 shot target # 6 Crows. Charge, wads, shot load etc all same.

Must say I gave up entering 8 guns in tournaments 20 16 12 & 12 Hammerless then all 4 again with Hammer guns. It was 4 days work. Now it’s 20 & 12 Hammerless only. I do miss the 10 Hammerless Ithaca
