9-40 Tang Screws

Any idea where I could pick up a pair of 9-40 tang sights screws for an old Marlin project I have. Everyone has 8-40 currently but they are too loose in hole and I'm afraid they will strip out when tightened. I am stumped. Thanks.

With out looking up the actual #9 screw diameter, you could try a 8-40 split die and open it up. Go to far and it will crack though. Assuming you have a screw blank. Option 2 is turn/thread on a lathe.

Steve stent me a set.  Give him a call.

Now you got me stumped. I have never heard of a #9 screw except for wood. I searched and found no info for a #9-40 screw.

Machinery's Handbook #25 does not have a listing for #9 screw. The #8 is .164" diameter and #10 is .190". Several gun manufactures used odd sizes just so people could not get parts from the hardware store. I run in to this sometimes and end up making custom screws. Winchester used a #10-35.5 on some of their guns, a 10-36 will usually work. I have seen a few peep sight inserts with 7/32-40.

I cannot find any contact information. It seems he shut down his operation.I may have to find someone else  willing to spin me up a couple. Ideas?

Flatlander,  bolts/screws come in different tolerances.  Are your 8-40’s from a good source?

Try one of the M4.5 threads - I don't remember off the top of my head which pitch, but that's worked for me on occasion.

A #9 machine screw should be 11/64 diameter

11/64-40 seems to be a fairly common thread in Julie sewing machines, length and head style may be an issue, but it’s a start.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Just buy them from Ken, and they'll be perfect for a Marlin Ballard or other early Marlin repeaters.

Number drill sizes, '0' being .060". Each increment being .013. #8, .104 + .06 = .164 ... #10, .130 + .06 = .190.

A #9 ... .177 ... 9/64 = .172 ...

Never seen a 9 ... but heard stories of much larger and smaller.

Whoops... correction..

A '00' being .047" ... '000' .034.

Old Timer (likely younger then I am now) told me a story of chasing one or the other of those. 'You think an 0-80 is bad ...'
