Block clearance in a Ballard

I have about .030 clearance between the block and the inner receiver wall. The opening is .735 and the block width is .700 Is this too much not enough adequate? This is a casting kit.

Don’t think there is much you can do about it. .030 isn’t extreme…

The inner surfaces are parallel and all I did is a little file and sandpaper work to clean them up. Good quality casting with no warpage that I could detect. Was just curious if the clearance was too much or too little. The blocks were another story. Had to machine them to clean up and to get the sides parallel. Everything cleaned up at .700 thick and when I was done I had the .030 clearance.

This sideplay will only amount to .015 left to right on your firing pin strike. IMO you will be fine…

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

It's more clearance than any of my originals have, but as Tom said I'm not sure it will be a problem since I've never seen this issue. Guessing I would have stopped before the sides got totally cleaned up, and only worried about the area that's above the action to be perfectly clean.

Didn't really think about it when I was doing the block. Was more worried about cleaning everything up. I should have measured a little more closely the opening. Live and learn I guess.
