Stevens 44.5 barrel interchangeability

Somewhere I read that the 44 was not interchangeable with other 44's but the 44 1/2's were. 
Question, is this true.

I own quite a few 44 1/2's. For the most part different original barrels will index just fine. Some barrels might be off slightly. Getting correct headspace can be a crap shoot with your breech block though.
