You were hoping for something else???
This was not really "hunting", but it was shooting small critters with my Stevens 44 in 25 RF. We went on Gopher safari last week and I brought along my SS to try out the 25 RF cartridges I made. It thumped them pretty good and I shot about 80. Much fun !!!

What I really miss most about Tacoma WA is hunting trophy squirrels with my brother Bob.

A blind squirrel runs into a tree every once in a while.

A cautionary warning but very serious. I've hunted dogs years ago but rarely anymore. I continue to see forum photos of hunters either handling or getting very close to dead prairie dogs. This is bad medicine.

Prairie dogs die off every so many years from the plague. It can decimate dog towns for hundreds of miles. It is transmitted by fleas so coyotes, badgers, hawks etc can carry these fleas. Fleas are indiscriminate parasites looking for warm blooded hosts, that's you !  Plague can take various forms such as bubonic. My advice is shoot em but don't get close, same with coyotes etc. You never know when they could be infected.

Lots of guys skin their coyotes for the fur. If you suspect fleas place the coyote or other animal in a big trash bag and spray it with Raid or another insecticide and leave it in the bag long enough to kill the fleas. I would handle the animal with disposable nitrile gloves. and use them while skinning.

if you are not successful getting any groundhogs or squirrels while out (like at the bar when you told her it was a hunting afternoon)- well, you could stop off at the store and buy a can of this and cook it while you tell her of the great shot you made to provide such a feast. mmmm, good Roll Eyes

Pat hit the nail on the head with that one.

Tacoma squirrel is altogether preferable to what we here in Nevada get from California, which is very often some kind of cross breed of nuts and fruits.

I am quite interested to learn the ballistics of your 25 RF.  Is it the 25 long ?  What is the bullet weight ? What is the velocity ?
I have a Steven model 44 in 25-20 wcf and would like to duplicate the ballistics of the 25 long RF with it.
