What Bullet Diameters Do I Want?

I am considering ordering an Accurate Moulds 32-218 tapered mould and adjusting the band sizes to fit my 32-40 Douglas barrel.  The barrel specs are: Douglas xx 12 twist with a .3191 groove.  I was thinking of getting a .320 base band and tapering down from there. Any thoughts?

Jack, what's the bore size, .312?

Also, what kind of throat, ahead of the case does it have?

I measure .312 with a small hole guage.  I can't remember if I asked Dave Casey to throat it.  I will do a chamber cast tomorrow.  This started out as an experimental ctg by Andy Zornacky based on a 357 Max case with a bottleneck to 32.  Andy's brother Richard Zorin said it never shot well and suggested making it into a 32-40.  I have been using a .3225 base diameter tapered 3 groove Darr designed Hoch mould that shoots well, but it was suggested that I try a groove diameter bullet.

Jack, here's what I'd suggest for a std 32/40 throat.

I might have a small groove 32 tapered bullet mold. I'll check if your interested.

Thanks, to both of you Smiley I'd love to make it to Tommy's again, to see both of you and Grampa and the Canucks.

I think this is the mold I have. I'll take a look tomorrow.

Looks like a good fit but maybe a bit short for my 12 twist but the proof is on the target. I am only shooting 209 gr bullets now.  The NOE 32 ELCO is too fat but I can seat it with some effort.

Thanks Frank

Not sure if Ron Smith will ever be coming down again. We haven’t seen any of the clan since pre Covid   Wayne is the only regular making it. There have been a couple of other Canadians but not the old crowd.

If you like, I can draw a tapered bullet 1.30 long that Accurate can make.

Thanks for the offer Frank, but I think your dimensions on their existing bullet design should work.  There is a throat.  This crappy cast and photo shows it.

Jack have you looked at the Mos spitzer that CPA sells?  I finally cast a few from my new mold.  Haven't shot any yet, but I was hoping they'd be happy in my Douglas 1:14 twist barrel.

The bullet looks a lot like the Hoch 322205 but a bit smaller in diameter.

The base band measures .321" on mine with the front band at .313".   That's 16:1 alloy.

I haven't shot any of them, but they look good.

Chris.

Thanks Chris.  That is interesting.  I wonder if they are all that diameter.  Worth a shot Smiley
