Cartridge impinging on hammer in 44 1/2

As in title, When I shoot the Stevens when extracting the case (.38-55) the rim seems to hang up on the top of the hammer. Is this normal. I can extract it every time just sometimes I have to play with it more than others. It is Starline long brass (due to the chamber measurements). That might be the cause (length) but if so I'll just have to live with it 'cause it shoots GREAT.

What happens when you load ?

Are you shooting fixed or breech seating?

It may actually be a diameter problem, possibly out of round. So careful measuring of cases that have a problem compared with those that don’t.  If case mouths are not expanding the same, it might make sense. Or not all having the same trim length. Either way your probably only a few thousandths difference.

Something else to make sure of is that the ones that remove easily do not have a case mouth that is rolled over. This would be too long for the chamber and being crimped. If that is happening, it might give you the clearance needed for easy removal.

One way to solve the problem would be to remove a little off the rim of the case. This would also give you a way to index the case/cartridge into the chamber each time, in theory increasing accuracy.

The problem may be by removing too much of the rim, the extractor has less to push against. So you would want to rotate the case to fire.

My guess is that you find some inconsistencies in the brass and can trim accordingly without loss of accuracy.

My Stevens 44 1/2 in 38-55 has the same issue. I simply place the hammer at full cock, there isn't any interference
that way. I would guess that most original Stevens 44 1/2's in 38-55 have the issue with the cartridge hitting the hammer.  CPA fixed that issue with large cartridges in their rifles by using a lower profile hammer.

On my CPA 44 1/2, it loads a 45-70 with no interference, the 45-90 barely rubs on the hammer at half cock, and my 45-100 requires the hammer to be in full cock position to load the cartridge, but it still contacts the hammer slightly.

Longer cartridges still rub on the CPA lower profile hammers

Thanks again. It seems that the key is to place the hammer on full cock before lowering block.
