Looking for info about historic schuetzen matches

I'm looking for some history about schuetzen matches with the painted targets.  The ones that were Usually of an animal.
I'd like to put something on like this at my sportsman club. I'd like to know a little bit more about the history and how they used to host the competition and how you won.

That was generally called a King target. Each competitor at a match was allowed one shot (offhand of course) at the target. Closest shot to the center won. It was a winner take all event (no second place). In Europe, there was a wooden peg inserted into each bullet hole that had the competitor's entry number painted on the peg. Many clubs decorated their shooting house walls and ceilings with those targets.
Below is one I did recently for our ISSA regional match.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

When I first started shoring with the single shot crowd in Tacoma I only had a 45-70 Shiloh and a trapdoor and only shot the BP matches. I did try for the king and managed to get the last hand painted one that Joe Carr made using my trapdoor.  I guess he had been making them for a while and was a good artist. I have been making them for Tacoma from tin signs or using printed material glued on.

Here's the king target I won last year. We shoot it at our yearly .22 match. The winner of the target has to make the target for next year.

I'm thinking about copying the cover from the Single Shot Exchange

My favorite king target  was brought into the Frontier Gun Shop in San Diego sometime back in the 1970s.  It was a bunch of Papiermark (German) bills from the 20s, arrayed in a circle like a deck of cards fanned out by a dealer.  They were all stamped with higher values, some had been stamped several times.

The guy who brought it in said that when his father died he inherited a small fortune but he (the kid) was a minor.  When he finally got his money he used it to buy dinner.

I wish I had the sense to take a picture of the target.  It had been used in a match.

A lot of these targets that were used in Germany are shown in the Alte Schibenwaffen books. Some of the shooting houses, museums etc. in Germany have targets that date back to the 1400s. The winner, was often the loser, as he had to pay for the banquet, as well as commission a target for the next year. This is still being done in Germany, and their traditional matches are a lot more fun than ours—plus they drink beer.
