Ballard Rifle and Cartridge Switch Barrel - $6,900

Print Post
For sale is a Ballard Rifle and Cartridge Co Switch Barrel Rifle in 38-50 Remington Hepburn and 32-40. I purchased it approximately 5-6 years ago.  When I bought it it had a few issues that needed to be worked out so I went to the old Ballard Rifle and Cartridge shop (now Wyoming Armory) and spoke with Keith Kilby there about addressing the issues. It’s a one of a kind but they had the necessary parts to fix the droopy lever and do a complete rework of the action to make it perfect.  Originally it had the big "U" Notch Scheutzen style butt, which I didn’t like so I asked if they could build me a new butt plate without changing the stock at all.  They actually had another of these hook style butt plates around and were able to modify it to be usable for me!  Then the issue was that the Color Case hardening didn't match, so I had them strip the finish off all the metal parts and re do the bone and charcoal color case hardening everywhere.  It turned out absolutely gorgeous.  One of the best jobs I've ever seen.  So this gun will include the original hook butt plate (this is the one that was originally fit to the rifle at initial build), as well as the new butt I had made so it was shootable for a bigger guy.  It also has a palm rest and some other items for reloading and whatnot.

This is an unbelievable piece.  It is a 38-50 Rem Hepburn and a 32-40 switch barrel.  The wood is pristine, the gun is like new with very few handling marks at all.  It was gone through by Wyoming Armory just a few years ago and has only been fired a handful of times since.  This would truly be a one of a kind piece that would be impossible to replicate today.  I've got $7,000 into it.  I would like to get my investment back out of it if possible as my cancer expenses are mounting with travel and treatments and whatnot.

If you're interested I will send you whatever pictures you want and we can work out a deal.  Thank you!

Beautiful wood, analine dyed maple done well by somebody who understood the analine procedure which is very tricky on Tiger Maple.

Rick,
The wood on this rifle is a piece of walnut not maple, is is heavily striped.  I have a identical stock on my #6 ballard

Beautiful Rifle..

So the three line markings on the receiver would tend to indicate that this is a cast vs. forged receiver. ???

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Yes, even their .22's were the same steel as all their actions. None were cast or forged; just simply high quality modern CNC machined steel.

Thanks to both of you,

My bad, I was thinking it was an original... Thanks for the education.

The reference to 'case coloring' led me down the wrong road.
