Gary Geissler's Borchardt

Gary's competition rifle seemed to change every two years. He shot a Comblain, an original Hepburn, an original '74 Sharps, and finally this fine Borchardt at the Quigley.

Borchardts are super neat. I like the lever on Gary's rifle. Easy to open.  A Mike Stevens Walker midrange sight?

Very nice.

What a beautiful rifle !! I really don't see many Borchardt's around. Even at large Gunshows. I take it's a 45-70 ?

Gary is one of the reasons I started attending the Quigley. When I started bpcr shooting, I began getting the black powder cartridge news and in it  was a picture of this guy shooting a Comblain rifle and wearing a British pith helmet. I had no idea who he was but I told myself "I've got to go to that match, it sure looks a lot of fun". After meeting the two of you at the Restwel and finding out who Gary was, things only got better from there. Talk about some good times.

That Borchardt action was in Rodney Stories booth at the same time that he had my Fields Patent .450 BP express.  I didn't have enough cash to buy both, but the Borchardt was very attractively priced.  I went down to where Gary and the group were shooting, and told Gary that he needed to buy a borchardt to build.  He went down and bought it, built it and shot it the next year.

Tell us more about his Comblain. Here are my 2. Top is a 50-70 and the bottom is a 45-70.

Now, Tom, you know better than to suggest that;-) Actually I have a gun bearer and I can't even convince him to pull the trigger. The 50-70 has a fast twist barrel and uses a 625 grain bullet. The 45-70 has a cut down Martini Henry carbine barrel and even with a little 405 grain hollow base there is no doubt that the primer has done its job. Come to think of it, I may have a 325 grain I could try in it. Might even be fun then!

Gary had a Kermit Hoke midrange sight on the Borchardt. His Comblain had a buttstock held on loosely with some leather wrapped around the wrist and copper rivets in it. You could rotate it 1/4" right or left. The forearm had some leather wrapped around it. It shot great in the match! He wore the pith helmet with a bullet hole in it on the shooting line.

Thanks. I was not familiar with Hoke sights. I like the design, very compact.

Gary  was one super fine friend. He knew that I liked the .44-77 and he said I have one for you if you want it. I said I will take it but don't send it I will take it at the Quigley next June and I sent him the money. A month later he said that He won't make the Quigley and I have to send it and he told me the reason.
One fine friend and I also wonder what happen to his friend Doc. Lay?
