What is the best case to form the 40-70 BN round. Book says 45 basic but would 45-90 work?

Depends on the version of the 40-70 bn. Some use thee 45-70 case others use 45-90 case trimmed.
40-90 bn can be done from 2.4 or 2.6 cases, with 2.6 being the best choice, altho very hard to find right now.

Bob as you know that's the first time in a couple 3 years now. They shipped some ,said out of stock ,and now apparently back in stock.
Hopefully the brass supply thing will get back to where folks can readily get useable bpcr brass.
If any outfit set up to make a run of 40-70 straight and 45 2 7/8 I'm betting it would be out of stock in a matter of minutes.

I would buy both in a heartbeat. I have gotten four shipments from Starline in the past three weeks. Still have some on backorder and hope they give me time to replenish bank account before they ship more.

JHM, .45/90 Starline works fine for my original Rem No.1 RB in .40/70 BN. I run it through a RCBS F/L die with the decapping rod remove & trim.

I have just such a set of dies I purchased from a gent here a couple weeks ago and also had a fellow contact me offering some already formed cases. While I wanted 50 he had 36 so that was good enough. I hope to buy a few more 2.6 cases and finish out my 50. Thanks for the information. Nice to know I won't have to fight the cases to form them.

jmh, after posting yesterday i went back to check my reloading records. When I was forming .40/70 SBN from .45/90 Starline brass I actually used a RCBS .40/70 SBN trim die.... not the F/L sizing die (the old memory is not what it used to be  Smiley). It was a simple operation when used with ample sizing lube and I didn't try to size with one pass. The cases were nicely formed only requiring trimming & annealing. I was using a .40/70 Win F/L die with the decapping rod removed to form .40/70 Win cases for a Win 1886.
You might be able to get away with using your F/L die, give it a try. Sorry if I gave you a bum steer.

I picked up a rolling block last year that was 'chambered' .40-70 bn. Whomever did the chamber job cut it to use the .45-70 brass instead of the longer 45-90.  Basic case shape is the same, just a shorter neck.

Kenn

Dan Phariss developed a shorter 40-70BN when he worked at Shiloh and it was called 40-70 Govt. Steve Garbe featured it in his BPCR primer a few years back. I built a gun using a Uberti hi wall action. The round is just a shorter 40-70 BN. With 300 gr RCBS bullets it shot real well.

A few years ago I had an original 1874 Sharps in 40-70 BN and got ahold of ch-4d to get dies. One of the dies I bought was a trim die which easily formed 45-70 brass into 40-70 BN. I don't see the benefit of using 45-90 brass but I must be missing something since the 45-70 brass worked fine.
