That's a good question and I can't directly answer it.  However, I have a couple 044 1/2 actions myself.  One with a centerfire breech block and the other a rimfire.  My thoughts on the action are that a 357 Magnum might be pushing it and a 357 Max just might be over the top.  Because of this, I'd be inclined to build such a rifle on the larger 44 1/2 frame.  Per a communication with Gail at CPA, the 044 1/2 is too small to handle a cartridge with the rim diameter of a 30-30.  Given the 357 Mag/Max has a rim diameter of .440 and the 30 30 a rim diameter of .506, the former may be pushing the limits of the little Stevens.  Anyway, I am by no means an expert so I will be following your post for results.

You are limited by the 3/4" barrel shank diameter. I personally would stay with the .32-20 case size or smaller.
.25-20 wcf, .218 bee, .22 hornet. Maybe a .32 H&R magnum.

The 32 H&R Mag crossed my mind last night when I responded to the post.

This falls into the area of what about the next guy. The action should be fine, but age is a factor. 357 maximum is a 40,000+ psi cartridge, that’s a lot to ask with that large of a case head.

I wouldn’t hesitate to chamber it in 38 extra long, which is basically a 357 Max, with a heeled .375 bullet. Black powder pressures would be fine. There are plenty of example of larger cartridges in weaker barrels and actions.

For hoop strength a .380 case head in a .750” tenon of the 044 1/2 is comparable to .473” case head in a .875” tenon of the 44 1/2. Lots of 44 1/2 were chambered in wildcats based on the 7MM Mauser cartridge. 257 Robert’s being the most famous.

I have an 044 1/2 chambered in probably 30 Schwartz short. The differences between that and 30-30 Wesson are negligible. 357 Max straight taper to .308” bullet. I shoot with confidence at reasonable pressures. I also have 30 Schwartz long barrel for it. 30-30 case straight tapered to .308” bullet. That one sits on the shelf. I don’t have the confidence whoever made the barrel had.

357 magnum, makes it less likely to be over pressure by someone else.

You could always chamber it in 360 Rook and no one would ever bat an eye about safety.

One to consider is, that the 357 Maximum, Dan Wesson revolver, has a barrel thread of .655 x 40 tpi.

They use the same thread for the 44 Mag, too.

I don't believe any revolver, even with alloy steel will be as strong as a fully supported, sliding breech block action.

Remember, for ANYTHING to happen, regarding hoop strength, the barrel has to fail FIRST. With modern barrel steels, there is a considerable safety factor.

That said, I have a LW, with a original 28" long, 32 long barrel, that was rebored to .357. It was chambered in 357 Mag when I bought it and I had it reamed to Max, with a rifle throat. But, I call it a 38 XL.

Using WC 820 powder, I chrono loads of 146 gr GC bullet @ 2100 fps and a 208 gr GC bullet @ 1800 fps. My regular BS load was 14 gr 4227 with a 208 gr PB bullet.

This cartridge is about the best all round chambering that there is, for smokeless powder and can take both large and small game!
