I'm looking for very low recoiling black powder load for a trapdoor for the young'nz.
A close friend's 7 year old was over a few weeks ago and asked about my reloading equipment and then started helping me load a box of my 480 grain 45-70 loads. He was quite entertained and asked his dad to buy him some reloading machines
I got to thinking I had some round balls loaded in some 45-70 cases for trapdoor plinking loads. These loads were described in Spence Wolf's book on loading for the trapdoor. Basically you drop 5-7gr of black into the case and load the 457 round ball (lubed with LLA) deep in the case directly on the powder.
I took him out with those and he really enjoyed shooting them in the trapdoor and wants to come load some more with me.
You still get a little fire and smoke in the dark with these loads (we shoot at night on his dad's very well lit range) and it was the fire and smoke he thought was really cool. He actually asked the next afternoon when we shot again, why he didn't see the fire anymore.
So I'd like to stick to the black for those factors.
I'd like to continue to foster an appreciation of this stuff with him so I'd like to start thinking about the next step up to something that looks like a "real bullet".
I see there are a few collar bullet options in the 185gr range and there used to be a 460210 rapine hollow base that would have been a good option. I also see a JIM460265HB bullet, which looks to be a 460 265 gr bullet....
In Spence Wolfs book, he mentioned 20, 25, and 30gr loads of 3F with that 460210 bullet, however he doesn't mention a filler. He does mention a filler in his smokeless version of this load...
Would I not need a filler of some sort to take up any air space in such a load with BP?
So can anyone recommend a bullet or a load for this purpose?
Thanks!
