I pulled 9000 lbs of 85/10/5 out of a basement where the guy had smelted it into 35 lb ingots.  Sent it to a refiner in ST Louis and they separated the lead from the tin and antimony, at that time antimony was 12 a lb.  Curious, what is it now???

Interesting discussion.  I tend to flux when surface scum and my dipper get nasty.  It interferes with dipping.   I am still puzzled about the composition of the surface scum as I use certified 20/1.

an inexpensive solution to your dipper getting nasty with the skim is to go and get one of the cheap Lee dippers and use that for your skim. I flux mostly with carnuba wax chips, works well and smells good but does make a bit of a mess on the dipper. The cheap lee dipper isn't really big enough for my casting needs but makes for a great skimmer.

I'm cheap. I simply use an old stainless steel spoon from an old silverware set as a skimmer for the casting pot.

I use the wax chips/flakes like Sam. Walt from NEI told me that I should try them.  I get mine from eBay.  I use an old spoon wired onto a piece of wood for initial skimming but use my Lyman dipper upside down to skim during casting and return all that dross to the pot at the end of the session.

I haven’t lost all my marbles yet but there is definitely a hole in the bag somewhere.

There is no stainless steel in a silverware set.
