Stevens 44 1/2 Single Set Trigger - ID help?

I bought a Stevens 44 1/2 varmint rifle, gunsmithed by the CC Johnson shop, in an auction.  Couldn’t resist, I reread all of CS Landis’ books annually.

I didn’t notice right away that it had a single set trigger.  I’ve never owned a 44 1/2, but thought they have an adjustment screw that was vertical behind the trigger.  So, maybe this is an aftermarket trigger.

I have to figure out how to shrink file size in order to post photos here.  I’ll put them on this thread.

I have no answer for you, but I do have a few questions.

Is that a set trigger, or an adjustable trigger? I ask because the position of the screws that I see are remarkably similar to what ‘smiths used to add to the Ruger Standard Auto pistol before aftermarket adjustable triggers became available.

If it is adjustable, rather than set, my money is on Johnson having added the screws.

I have a couple of Stevens 44 1/2's with single set triggers. Your rifle looks 100% to have a factory single set trigger.
At the front of the trigger plate/bottom tang, there is a tiny screw that holds the small leaf spring that powers the set trigger. If you take the stock off you will be able to see the spring. The single set trigger has very few parts and is a simple system. The trigger plate/tang is the same as the rifles with a regular single trigger with the addition of the tapped hole at the front.  The triggers are different, the sear spring has a notch at the front of  it for clearance. They didn't always work very well so they weren't very popular. One of my rifles the set trigger works well, the other one not so much.

This is a new action/rifle to me, so I'm going slow in tearing it down. I had the stock off, next time I will photograph it. There is a small screw at the front of the trigger as well as at the rear.  I tried to photograph both.

The main spring has a block added between it and the lower tang. I did notice that.  The rifle has never had scope blocks installed and/or show any evidence of ever having been fired since being put together.

It does look like a factory single-set to me as well, although I've only seen them in books and woodcuts in the Stevens catalog.

I would hazard a guess that your action was originally a straight tang version, and Johnson bent it for the custom pistol-grip stock.  I have a Stevens 044-1/2 similarly modified, and it has a lump welded on the tang and dressed down to form a pad for the mainspring base.

The mainsprings for factory straight grip and pistol grip actions were different, as the aftermarket parts catalog that CPA offers for original Stevens rifles points out.  Some sort of modification to the tang would be necessary in order to use a straight-grip spring on a pistol-grip tang.
