Looks kinda sketchy to me, but what do I know?  Fortunately, it’s not something I would be buying anyway.

One of the worst fakes I've ever seen! He's mistaking "rare" for modified work. Besides being rethreaded for a Ballard, and rebored, it appears the rifling fades away to none at the muzzle end. And it's neither Pope rifling style, nor is it left hand twist.
If it was free I'd not want it myself.

But but but,  it’s got the super rare “ X” marks at the end of the roll marks that a serious Stevens collector has never seen before!

Guess the "serious Stevens collector" didn't want it either when this guy showed him? Smiley
Maybe it was the $700 price tag?

$600 on GB but I think it has a reserve.

With where and how it’s stamped, I wouldn’t be surprised if the 32-40 wasn’t an earlier re bore. A lot can happen with these old rifles that have been around since 1794.

What is the phrase "buyer beware"? I am certainly not an expert on Pope's barrels but I think I would shy away from this one.

Pope did rebore and rifle many barrels, so it is possible to find a non Stevens-Pope barrel that would have his typical HM POPE stamp instead. He did barrels from almost every maker's guns if customers wanted an existing barrel rebored to a larger caliber by him.
He also bought numerous barrels new from Winchester that were smooth bored so he could bore and rifle them to whatever caliber the customer wanted.
But as mentioned previously, Pope had great stamps, and his markings were very legible and neatly done. He did make some barrels without his name stamped on them, but have his left hand twist, and proper markings under the forearm for twist rate, etc.
