Ruger #1 to 38-55

Well it seems I might have put the cart in front of the horse.  I've jumped ahead and had my #1 re-barreled to 38-55 thinking the ejector would possible work or one could be had from Ruger.  Well the last thought was WRONG.  They well not send an ejector other then for the caliber the rifle was manufactured in.  In this case 223.  They check the serial number.  I did have them to send a replacement, which they are at no charge.  I figured I can play with one and still have a working ejector.  Has anyone done something similar and what was your work around?  Does anyone know if an ejector from a 30-06 based caliber world work.  I have another #1 in 25-06.  If that would be a better fit I'll call back and order an ejector that that rifle.  Thanks for any help.

Seems like a 25/06 ejector should be just like a 30/06 the parent case.,

Check on eBay, under Ruger #1 extractors. There are several listed and one states for a 38-55. Your 25-06 should work in the 38-55, they are spring loaded and one extractor works to several sized cases.

If I remember right there are only 3 or 4 different extractors for the #1 ranging from 22 Hornet all the way out to the magnums. I worked on one that had been opened up to 577 NE but I think that extractor had to be altered some. I did one in 22 LR and had to weld some on the extractor. The 30-06 should work on the 38-55 or the 223 can be altered to work.

Thanks for the information guys.  Thanks Sam for the heads up on Ebay. I ordered the ejector/extractor for 38-55 etc.  I'm looking forward to shooting this rifle.  Have not decided yet if I want to go black powder or smokeless for Schutzen matches.  I will be using cast bullets.

Fire formed my first brass today. Does anyone have a idea of where one might get brass?

Thanks craigster for the heads up.  I just got my order in from Starline on Saturday.

My next question is about bedding the forend.  I know #1's can be hit or miss when it come to shooting consistently.  As a 223 three this #1 also held 1/2 minute of ground hog.  My 25-06 #1 also shoots vary well.  So in case this one now decides not to behave I was thinking of starting with bedding the forend.  Has anyone bedded the forend of their #1?  If so, I would sure appreciate seeing some photos of how you did it.  Thanks.

PS: my notification does not seem to be coming through. I have checked the box.  Any suggestions?

Boob D,

I do quite a bit of work of No. 1's.

If you do decide to bed your forend, start with the receiver face. Once that is done, decide if you want to free float the barrel channel or bed it to the barrel.

I've had both methods work, but it's barrel dependant. The higher end barrels seem to care less about the method than factory barrels.

If bedding the barrel channel, leave room in the forend for the spring hanger to do it's thing. If free floating the barrel, bed the spring hanger on the bottom and sides. Be EXTREMELY careful with locking off everywhere on the hanger and above the hanger so your bedding doesn't create a mechanical lock.

Don't tighten the mounting screw during any of this process. You don't want it to add any stresses while your epoxy is curing. Use tape to secure the forend in place. You can also use tape to set the gap in the barrel channel if you free float.

Thanks for the information Paul.  I was able to get some test rounds loaded up on Friday and get to the range.  75 rounds, three different powder, three each in half grain increments, min to max.  Of course the two best loads were the first one paper and the last one.  Considering the group I think the bedding is fine. I'm going to load more of the 4895 to be sure before trying black powder.

Wow. I thought you were shooting your .38-55. But, that's a helluva group you shot from your anti-tank gun! Roll Eyes

Yessir, it looks like your forend is fine the way it is!
I've got a 38-55 No.1 rebarrel scheduled, I'll be cutting an octagon barrel for it. I'm looking forward to seeing more results from yours.
