He only buys nice rifles.  I only buy cheap ones.  I like trying to make cheap stuff work well.  He likes to shoot matches.  I like to add lead to the local gun range berm.

The description sounds like the barrel in this kit has a great bore at "9 out of 10" described. I'd probably leave it at a .40-65 as I think that's a great cartridge and have 4 or 5 of them now.

I got the rifle today.  The outside of the barrel is in good shape with no finish left.  The bore is at least a 9+.
I initially figured the bore would be rough, but I am now very happy.  The musket buttstock is in great shape as well.  The action had no finish except for the lever.  I will take it apart later to see the innards but it functions well with a nice trigger pull.  All in all a great buy in my not so humble opinion.

Jack

Well, after disassembly, I now say a slightly less great buy.  The block and firing pin are the old large BP style.

My 1885 40-65 has the old style large firing pin. Works perfect with BP and smokeless. Reduced smokeless loads.

You planning on building a high pressure rifle?

I have always thought that a 50 BMG high wall would be a really stupid idea but of course I would only shoot reduced cast bullets loads.  I do have a large firing pin in my 33-20 low wall.  Maybe I will put the 28 G&H barrel on this action for now.

I meant high pressure not big pressure. I know you have a 30-40 Krag barrel for a high wall.

Here's one I'm working on Jack. Got the action with stock from Joe D. Tony Heits provided the forestock. Got the Darr barrel from a shooter at Missoula about ten or fifteen years ago. Had all but a couple parts to put a complete rifle together. I'm liking this plain old deluxe Winchester parts gun. When the weather warms up I'll blue the barrel. 7 groove RH twist at 18 inches. Breech block was bushed with a small firing pin.

Posting it for you cause I know you like 1885s and you thrive on guidance. Bring your best 1885 to Tommy's this year and we'll battle it out in a BR match for money.

Sticking my neck out here since I've only test fired it out the Jeep window.

So I have to get a Jeep to bring to Spokane so we can have an out~of~the~window shoot off?  I always bring a high wall to Spokane.  Looser buys the BBQ.

I'm game. Bring a Jeep and we'll shoot out the windows in front of the firing line up to the butts at 200 yards. Or the more conventional way, from benches. Either way, you're on!  Smiley

How about from a bench THROUGH your Jeep window.
I was playing with the Paul Shuttleworth 32-40 yesterday and when I changed seating depth I got a 200 yd 5 shot 1” group.  I will be putting that rifle against my old 32-40 that has won a few times.

I just got back from the gym. I need a nap first.

I read a quote on FB the other day:

Quote:
I never thought that I would be the guy who got up early and went to the gym

And I am not.

I'm up at 4:30, coffee at 5:30 with the guys, back home at 7:00 where I take my pills, a tuna sandwich and a gin and tonic, Buddy gets his morning rub down and then I take my nap. Gym? I don't have time for gym....

Here is the rifle.  Paul's name is engraved on the top barrel flat between the scope blocks.  This came from Andy Zornacky's estate and was chambered in a 32 bottleneck case based on a 357 Max.  Richard Zorin recommended rechambering to 32-40 since they could never get that wildcat to shoot well.

This is another one of Andy's rifles, he had quite a collection! I break-up my Winchester fetish with an occasional Ballard

Nicer than mine Bob.  I think most bidders were leery of the one I got.  The forend was taped on with blue tape and the barrel was marked .32 2.6.  Another member here got me in touch with Richard and he said that he and his brother were experimenting with short cases about 28 years ago.  Richard did a .38 and Andy did the 357 Max case with a 32 cal bottleneck.  It has a Douglas XX 12 Twist .3191 groove 12.1.96  It is just over 28 years old.  It has 6 wide grooves.  Maybe 2.5 times wider than the lands.  It doesn't like non tapered bullets.
