Stevens 44 1/2

I've a original Stevens 44 1/2 which is a 25-21 but the barrel is rough. I bought it to be re-barreled to 25-35 but I'm wondering if the action is adequate for a .257 Roberts or 25-35 Ackley Improved?

My “Go-To” hunting rifle is a 44 1/2 in 25/35AI. Drops 180# whitetails like cement statues tipping over. Suggest 10 twist as an all round happy twist. I will make another lightweight bbl this winter in 257AIR…Ackley Imp Rimmed using new 7x57R Norma brass.

257 Roberts wouldn't work very well in a 44 1/2 since it's a rimless cartridge, and a little bit hot for a 44 1/2. The extractor will work better with a rimmed cartridge.

The standard 257 Roberts has a working pressure rating of 45,000 CUP. Common loading data adheres to that pressure, unless the data is rated P+.

Rimmed cases can be made by necking down the 7mm Rimmed Mauser. The 7mm Mauser is it's parent case.
