Weaver T-25 and T-30

I have been thinking about buying a Weaver Target scope. I've always heard a lot of good things about them especially the El Paso models. I was looking at Bill Ackerman's website and they said how well built they were (of course he's the one that designed it for Weaver). But the website says that the early El Paso's used a grease on the turrets that vaped off and caused the lenses to cloud. Have any of you owners of the Weaver scopes seen this happen in yours and have to get them cleaned. They article mentions that if you find a later El Paso that they solved the problem.  I remember years ago, I was at a gun show and a guy had both the Weaver T-25 and a Redfield 6400. As I looked through them, I noticed the Redfield was much clearer so I ended up buying it not realizing that the Weaver could have been clouded because of the grease. How does a good one compare to the 36X Sightron?

Bob,
I’ve owned three of the old Weaver T’s. I still have two. I can’t say that any were cloudy but I will say that optically they’re not up there with the modern scopes.
What I like about them is the reliability of their adjustments. I had a 16x on my old LR rifle that I trusted far more than the Leopold that I replaced with it.
I have a Sightron target scope and it seems good but I’ve never used it in a match.
Many years ago I shot the Wimbledon match at Camp Perry with a borrowed 7 Mag and a T25 Weaver. Too much glass for prone shooting!

My opinion ElPasso Weaver T’s advantage is the adjustments . Elevation and windage precise and absolutely repeatable off the dial & you can count on the clicks operation. . The parallax adjustment has a micrometer scale that can be dialed in & recorded. Probably the only internal adjustment scope of its vintage equal to Unertl mechanics & operation.

All a significant advantage in High Power or Smallbore silhouette. When I switched to Leupold 6.5. X 20s had to change parallax 4 distances with a yardage scale that had little relationship to the targets distance. Complicated by few silhouette ranges precisely measured, correct setting same target different range  to range. Bench rest plenty of time for sighters adjustments not as critical.

No doubt the optics on leupolds are better than vintage Weavers, but on target ranges it’s not real important. Adjusting for various distances is important.
