Here is the Borchardt sporting rifle from the same auction. It is not marked but my guess is that the custom work was done by John Oberlies.
The panels behind the action have two different woods inlaid and the breech block has the damascening (?) type finish.
I thought about bidding on the Borchard too, but thought that if I won both it would be a fairly substantial financial outlay. I expected both to sell for quite a bit more than they did.
I stumbled across it while digging around looking for a beater Winchester 1890. I’ve got a notion to build an Indian decorated rifle, paint, brass tacks, wire etc. When I wasn’t looking for one they were everywhere I looked. I still haven’t found what I’m after, but in the process have about great dealed myself broke with a pretty nice second model 1890 22 Short, a dandy Winchester Model 61, a third Model 1890 WRF w/beautiful Lyman 1a and near mint barrel (circle P), a darn nice Marlin 39a w/Redfield receiver sight, a decent BRNO ZKM Model 2 and an early CZ 527.
Did you win the auction on the Borchard? If so, I congratulate you on your taste in rifles and look forward to hearing more about it in the future.
If I had my way I’d spend my time immersed in rebuilding, restoring, building single shots, but good ones are not easy to come by. Model 1890s and its offspring have caught my fancy and clunkers that have potential are a dime a dozen and I’ve been keeping myself entertained with them lately.
