Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I would think a 16" twist would be ideal! That's what I've used on all my .40 caliber builds from .40-70SS, .40-65 Win., and .40-85 Ballard. They handle bullets from 330 gr. to 410 gr. nicely and do well out to 1000 yds.

Thanks for the PM Jeff, I responded.

Marlinguy thanks.

One reference I found said 1 in 20 twist.  Think about that if this gun I have is 1-20 twist, perhaps that is why I got key hole's.  The bullets i was shooting were long and heavy. Maybe i needed short and light.

Original Ballard barrels in .40 caliber were 1:20" twist regardless of which .40 they were. My Pacific in .40-85 is and shoots extremely well with the heavier 410 gr. Snover bullet. I load them using 4198 and they are around 1350 fps. It shoots my lighter 330 gr. and 370 gr. bullets well also, but my bore is a  like new original bore.

Where to find a 20 twist, 40 cal liner.  Not on TJ's list. is there another source?

Not sure you will find one.  But, for what it’s worth, I’m fitting a new barrel to the action I am building for a 40-70 straight chamber in 16.  Also installing a liner, for the same chamber, in an original Ballard with a 16.  I think it was in my Hepburn build this was discussed by several people and thats why I settled on 16.  It sounded like 16 would handle most bullets.

1:20" twist is what they used originally, but as Bob mentioned a 1:16" twist is much better for almost any weight bullet you'd want to shoot.

Years ago, I had John Taylor line a .40-70 barrel for me.  I just ordered a 5/8" diameter barrel from Pac-Nor, and John reamed the barrel and installed that liner.

Pac Nor.  Of Course.

Since I am restoring Marlin Ballard  no. 5 PACIFIC using a JGS made in Coos Bay, Oregon on the PACIFIC coast.  It would only be keeping with the theme to have a barrel liner made by Pac-Nor in Brookings, OR on the  PACIFIC coast.

A very long time ago-about 40 years ago, I would have coffee in Orford's cafe, in Port Orford, OR with the Chip truck drivers carrying loads from Brookings to Coos Bay.  Chris Dichter was one of those drivers.  I was a Deputy Sheriff back in those days.  Those Truckers where my extended eyes. They would keep me advised of road conditions and traffic conditions from  Gold  Beach to north to the  Curry county line. If  you have ever Traveled US101 down the Southern Oregon coast in the winter, you understand how important communicating with these truckers was.

Oh my, a simple request for a barrel liner has resulted in a trip nostalgia lane...I claim the privilege via old age.   Grin .
