40-65 Bullet choice?

For those of you shooting the 40 cal, what grain weight of bullet do you like and find works best, I've got a 40-65 C sharps barrel, not sure of the twist as I haven't checked yet. I've also got an original sharps in 40-90 so would like to find a mold that would satisfy both. I might be dreaming but can always try, the 40/65 will get shot a lot more that the original so I'll start there. Thanks

Chris, I  use a N O E 412400 400 gr rn in my 40-65 shiloh with excellent results sometimes I also use a lyman 412288 288 gr rn.
The lyman doesn't shoot quite as well as the noe but it does pretty good.

If you have a 18' twist I would recommend the Saeco 640, if you have a 16" twist I would recommend the Saeco 740.  Both of those bullets will take a ram down at 500m at a velocity of 1225-1250 fps. Cast them no softer than 16-1.  Beltfed has some great designs for PP if you want to go that route.  Also, his 9+1 of COWW and Lino works great as well.

Cheers,
Steve

Ballards may be weaker,

I use a couple different molds and bullet weights for all my .40 caliber cartridges. For long range shooting in my .40-65 and .40-85 Ballard I love the Lyman Snover that drops at around 410 grains. For closer distance and for my .40-63 Ballard and my .40-50SS I like the RCBA CSA 350 grain bullets. I have tried the Snover in my .40-63 Ballard rifles also, and it works well in them too, but I don't usually shoot them past 500 yds., so no need for the heavier bullets.

It might be worthwhile to measure the groove diameters of
your two barrels. Modern .40 cal barrels generally run about .408, original Sharps .40s run about .410. Same bullet mold might not be ideal solution. Just saying.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Thanks guys, RSW my original barrel is .407, don't know what the C Sharps barrel is yet, I'll have to check on that but like I said I'll stick with just finding a good bullet for the 40/65 C Sharps barrel for now. Thanks again for the recommendations.

Both of the molds I mentioned using are around .411", so would need to be sized down most likely for your .407" groove barrel.

In my 16" twist Shiloh Sharps I've had good results with a Brooks Creedmoor style at 416 grains cast of 25/1. My ram and 600 yard load is a BACO 425 grain Creedmoor style with 2 reduced bands. Chicken load is the Saeco 640.

I have a Pedersoli 1874 Sharps in 40-65 and I use 400 grain, .410" dia. bullets from Bear Creek Supply. They are sized and moly lubed so no additional lube needed. They give me excellent accuracy with 35 grains of Varget.

My 40-65 with an 18" twist likes the Lyman Snover as well for long range or the 400 grain RCBS at 1120 fps.  For closer range it likes the RCBS 350 at 1070 fps.  RSW wrote on Jan 13th, 2025 at 2:32pm:
