Rusted eyepiece resolution

No, not looking through a rusted eyepiece...

I picked up a Lyman STS scope at the Sioux Falls show and like much of the plunder I gravitate towards, it was missing the lock ring on the front objective.  Made one, not an issue.  I grabbed the eyepiece to try moving it and try as we might, it wouldn't budge.  I know any kind of penetrant on a scope is taboo and I tried a little dab of heat with a heat gun, some leather wraps, rubberized lid grips, two of us cranking on it, nothing would move...  holding a scope because of the tube size (wall thickness) is a challenge without the gremlins making something fail.

A remedy that worked -  I had some left over acetal from a past job that got my attention.  I squared up a couple surfaces on each scrap, drilled a hole through to fit my diameters and drilled a couple of holes for clamp screws through the piece that served as the wrench.  Even with a snug fit to the tube and the eyepiece nothing moved.  I looked around for my can of rosin but in time of need I couldn't locate it.  I remembered some discussion once about powdered sugar for that use.  There was a box of week old donuts in the trash and it just so happened one donut with powdered sugar remained.  Just a dab of white, re-tighten the wrench and the block in the vise and what do you know, everything moved!  There was quite a bit of rust in the threads.
The scope got shipped off to Cheryl this morning for a cleaning and reticle change - everything's good.

Glad you got it loose. LIke you I had just reciently read about powdered sugar, I guess it really does work.
That front lock ring is a bit of a pain in the but to make, however the nice thing about lyman scopes is that they are all the same. Unlike the rest of the external old time scopes. A lot of them have diameters all over the place. I have seen front bells where I made caps for vary as much as .050 or more.  I just shake my head and wonder.

Good news.  I am headed out to buy a dozen powdered sugar donuts just in case I need them.

Jack

I promise not to eat all of them today.

She's running the business from what I understand, best method of contact I've discovered is via a text message.  Number is on the bottom of the website.  Usually answers with in the hour during normal working hours - I can appreciate that as a phone call tends to hinder production and if it's an unknown number, I rarely answer it either.
